Early one sunny evening somewhere in KL, as the local gliterati wander into exclusive watering holes before appearing at the club or the show, a toothless bag lady, face folded in wringkles, scrounges through a wire garbage can. Finding leftovers from McDonald's, she leans over the can and eats, her sunken lips quivering around a chicken bone. Amid mountains of glass and steel apulence, the sight of this old woman eating fowl out of the garbage wrestles me to a stop.
"u memang nak makan kat sini?" i asked. She nods, sensing a sucker. i stare, astonished. Then, in a gesture of defiance against a system that allows an elderly woman to eat like a dog, in a gesture of pity for a degraded old lady, but mostly in a gesture of desperation, i pull out of my purse, hand her RM10 , and step back.
"u pegi dan makan," i plead. "you tak yah makan kat tong sampah lagi yek". she nods again, smiles toothlessly, and then disappears amid the neon lights.
